The PhysioWise Online program is for anyone who either suffers from back pain or has a history of back pain.

The PhysioWise Online program is developed by Tuula Niskanen, a physiotherapist and Pilates instructor with over 30 years of experience working and teaching in fitness, Pilates, and physical therapy. The PhysioWise Online program combines Pilates and exercise therapy, and is specifically designed for people with back pain, injuries and spinal problems.

Yes, Tuula Niskanen is a licensed and registered physiotherapist in Finland.

We strongly recommend that you speak with your surgeon before you start. While the PhysioWise Online program can be a good fit following your post-op physical therapy, it does not replace your post-op physical therapy.

Even though Pilates is generally good because it helps to strengthen your deep spinal stabilizer muscles (which support the spine), some Pilates movements are difficult and not suitable for people with lower back pain. The exercises in the PhysioWise Online program are carefully designed to teach you how to improve your body awareness and re-connect your brains and muscles so that they can work better together.

Spinal manipulation and other passive treatments provide only short-term relief for you because the underlying problems remain undertreated. Achieving long-term relief from back pain requires you to take a more active role in your recovery process by working on your body with a proper exercise program. The PhysioWise Online program is designed for people just like you, and is the ideal program that can provide a long-term solution for your back pain.

There are four underlying problems that affect your spinal health and recovery process.

  1. A lack of core and spinal support and stability
  2. Weak gluteal muscles and/ or compensatory dysfunctions
  3. Tightness of hip-pelvic region muscles
  4. SI-joint and Lumbar spine hypermobility (too much movement)

Studies show that after the first episode of back pain, your spine-supporting muscles shut down partly and do not actually recover unless you start strengthening them.

If you feel pain during a particular exercise, you should stop that exercise and move to the next exercise where you don’t feel pain. That being said, if the pain is a nagging one that lasts all the time and does not change while you exercise, then it is okay to continue exercising. You may feel a discomfort as you start working on your muscles that haven’t been used in a while – and this is okay.

You can access your account with any device, including mobile phones, tablets, laptops, desktops, etc. – as long as you have an internet connection.

You can do all the exercises from the comfort of your home. Just make sure that the place where you exercise is quiet, so that you can concentrate on every movement (what you do and how you do them). In terms of equipment(s), a yoga mat, towel, pillow, yoga/rubber band and foam roller are beneficial, but not necessary.
